Ground Support Fixture Design
Project Overview
Engineering Design Services completed the design and analysis of specialized transport fixtures to support the safe handling and movement of launch vehicle components across multiple facilities. The objective of the project was to develop robust, flight-compatible transport solutions that protect sensitive structures while enabling efficient integration, testing, and logistics operations, including marine-based transport.
The scope of work included the design of 6 unique roll ring transport fixtures and 1 static transport saddle. These fixtures were engineered to interface directly with flight hardware without causing damage to the launch vehicle structure, while also supporting critical handling operations such as breakover using either double crane picks or integrated tooling systems.
Each fixture was designed to align with client-defined integration and testing procedures, ensuring compatibility with existing workflows and facility constraints. The roll rings were developed to interface seamlessly with the static transport saddle, creating a cohesive system capable of safely supporting and transporting rocket segments throughout various stages of handling and movement.
Given the requirement for marine-based transport, EDS incorporated materials and components suitable for corrosive environments, ensuring durability and long-term performance. All designs adhered to stringent industry standards, including NASA guidelines such as GSFC-STD-8009 and NASA-STD-5005, as well as project-specific technical requirements and constraints.
To validate the integrity and performance of the designs, EDS performed detailed finite element analysis (FEA) to confirm structural capacity under expected loading conditions. This ensured that each fixture met safety and performance criteria for lifting, transport, and operational use.
Additionally, EDS developed manufacturing and testing requirements to support fabrication and quality assurance. These included lift point pull testing, static load testing, weld inspections, and proof load procedures to verify that each fixture performs as intended prior to deployment.
By combining advanced mechanical design, rigorous analysis, and practical manufacturing guidance, EDS delivered a comprehensive transport solution that enhances safety, protects critical flight hardware, and supports efficient operations across facilities and transport modes.
