Hydrogen Facility
Project Overview
Engineering Design Services supported the engineering and design of a hydrogen generation facility located in the State of Washington. The facility utilizes green Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) technology to produce hydrogen as part of a sustainable energy initiative. EDS contributed during the construction phase by developing key engineering documentation and supporting process safety reviews to ensure operational reliability and compliance.
Result & Impact
• Delivered comprehensive engineering documentation supporting facility design and operations
• Improved system clarity, consistency, and operational reliability through structured PFD and P&ID development
• Enhanced process safety through formal HAZOP risk identification and mitigation planning
• Supported the development of sustainable hydrogen production infrastructure
• Ensured alignment with industry best practices and safety standards
• Strengthened the facility’s readiness for safe and efficient long-term operation
Engineering Tools & Technologies
• Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) hydrogen production technology
• Process Flow Diagram (PFD) development
• Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) design
• Process engineering documentation systems
• Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) analysis
• Industrial safety and risk assessment methodologies
• Hydrogen generation facility engineering
Scope
• Develop piping and valve specifications for hydrogen production systems
• Create facility-level Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)
• Develop Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
• Support engineering design documentation during construction phase
• Facilitate Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) study
• Identify operational risks and safety considerations
• Ensure compliance with industry best practices and safety standards
Solution
Engineering Design Services established the foundational process design documentation required for safe and efficient hydrogen facility operation. This included defining piping and valve specifications and developing integrated PFD and P&ID documentation to guide system layout and functionality. EDS also facilitated a structured HAZOP study to evaluate potential hazards, improve system design robustness, and ensure adherence to operational safety standards throughout the facility lifecycle.
