Thermal Imaging and I-V Curve Testing
Project Overview
Engineering Design Services provided comprehensive performance evaluation services for a utility-scale solar farm located in Central Texas using advanced drone-based thermal imaging and on-site I-V curve testing. The objective of the project was to identify underperforming assets, verify system health, and support proactive maintenance planning to maximize energy output.
EDS deployed unmanned aerial systems equipped with high-resolution thermal cameras to survey photovoltaic modules across the site. The aerial thermal inspection allowed for rapid identification of anomalies such as hot spots, faulty connections, damaged modules, and inverter-related issues without disrupting ongoing operations. Collected imagery was analyzed and compiled into actionable reports, enabling targeted corrective actions.
In parallel, EDS performed I-V curve testing on selected strings and modules to validate electrical performance against expected design parameters. This testing provided detailed insight into degradation, shading impacts, and balance-of-system issues that may not be visible through thermal data alone.
By combining drone-based thermal imaging with I-V curve testing, EDS delivered a comprehensive assessment of system performance. The results supported informed decision-making for operations and maintenance teams, improved system reliability, and helped the client optimize long-term solar asset performance.
